This was a very interesting guerrilla marketing campaign as marketing dollars are not spent in radio anymore. With the rise of social media and digital marketing, traditional radio advertisements have gone the way of the rotary phone. It’s dying! This guerrilla campaign for the Commodore 64 decided to use older technology to promote an upcoming event using guerrilla marketing tactics. What do you think? Was this a perfect marketing medium?
We wanted to invite Commodore 64 enthusiasts to a European convention. We decided to take them back to their beloved pre Internet era. So we created a video invitation. And then every hour we’ve been airing it on the radio.
The radio spot contained bleepy digital sounds from C64 program loading. The iconic sound when recorded and played on a C64 revealed an animated invitation for the event.
Fans recorded the message themselves, an MP3 version of the ad suitable for both C64 and it’s emulators has circulated forums and sites worldwide.
The number of attendants at the convention tripled.
